18th September 2014: Secondary School Open Day
5th and 6th Classes visited a local secondary school, Cabra Community College, on Thursday, 18th September 2014.
We completed science experiments, baking and an art lesson as well as seeing lots of different rooms and the school garden.

On Friday, 25th of September two members of the Irish Defence Forces came to our school to present an Irish Flag in preparation for the 1916 Rising Celebrations next year. The girls were a credit to themselves in how they behaved on the day. The girls sang ‘Ireland’s Call’ and members of the Student Union welcomed the crowd and read the Irish Proclamation. It was a very special day.
There has been great excitement in St. Catherine’s with Dublin winning the All Ireland Final. We have been doing art, bar charts, headbands and even songs based on Dublin and look forward to welcoming Sam Maguire to our school.
On Friday, 4th of September News2day visited the school to do a report on the ‘We are Writers’ Cookery Book. The crew filmed Ms. Shovlin’s Sixth Class baking brown bread. It was a very enjoyable day. We look forward to watching it on television.

June 2015
Congratulations to all the 6th class girls who graduated from St. Catherine’s Senior School today. We wish you every success for the future.
The girls had a celebration afternoon for their Plaque of Excellence in Science and Maths on Monday, 29th of June.
The girls who had excellent attendance received certificates and prizes. Congratulations girls!
Ms. O’ Neill’s class wrote fantastic books and dedicated them to someone special. The girls read their books to other pupils in the school. The illustrations and storylines were wonderful. Well done girls!
The school tours were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Classes visited Newbridge Farm, Funtasia, Tayto Park and Cavan Crystal Maze.
Ms. Shovlin’s girls made advertisements in English. Jessica made one for local business Barry’s Balloons and we sent it off to them. The business kindly delivered this beautiful balloon arrangement as a ‘Thank You’ to Jessica. The large balloon had Jessica’s original picture printed on it. The balloons attracted much attention throughout the school. Thank you to all at Barry’s Balloons.
Congratulations to the winners of the St. Columbus Parish Art Competition for 5th classes. Keep up the good work girls!
Ms. Shovlin’s class made lovely shortbread in the Cookery Room.
On Wednesday, 17th of June the fifth classes went to The Mary Aikenhead Heritage Centre in Harold’s Cross. The girls had a wonderful day. They learned lots about the life of Mary Aikenhead and saw the beautiful rose garden before they left. Many thanks to Sr. Philomena and Sr. Mary for facilitating the visit.
Active Schools Week 2015 (15th-19th of June)
Active Week was great fun this year. On Monday all of the children jogged a lap of the park. On Tuesday all of the children participated in Sports Day. Sports Day was great fun as usual. We did our races in ‘The Bogies’ in the morning which was great fun. Some of the activities included Tug of War, Obstacle Courses, Water Activities, Rounders and much more. We were so lucky with the weather as we were able to enjoy ice pops outside at the end of the day. On Wednesday each class held a hula hoop competition and finalists entered a whole school contest at 2p.m. On Thursday each class held a skipping competition. On Friday afternoon a Zumba teacher came to our school and taught the girls dancing for one hour. It was brilliant fun.

Ms. Shovlin’s class wrote to Sharon Ní Bheoláin inviting her to submit her favourite recipe for our book. She invited 5 lucky girls to visit RTÉ. The girls had a wonderful day, they went on a tour to the RTÉ Newsrooms, Fair City and met lots of familiar faces including Brian Dobson. Thank you so much Sharon for a truly memorable day!
The girls had a fantastic day at the racing in Santry on Thursday, 4th of June.

Ms. Sutton’s Class went on a wonderful trip to Cabra Library.
Some of the girls in Ms. Shovlin’s class and Ms. Lawlor’s class wrote letters to celebrities asking them for their favourite recipe for inclusion in our recipe book which is currently being printed. The girls received some lovely responses from the likes of An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar and Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke. A huge thank you to all the respondents. The responses are on display in the school. The recipe is available to purchase in our school office and costs €8 with profits going towards updating our school library.
Congratulations to Liwia from 5th class for winning 1st Prize in the drawing competition. Liwia’s picture will now be the front cover of the recipe book.
18th – 22nd of May
We celebrated Spelling Week. Classes participated in spelling games, word search puzzles and spot the difference puzzles. Tricky spellings were called out on the intercom each morning for each class. Congratulations to all the winners during the week and the overall Spelling Bees.
April 2015
On Wednesday, 29th of April we celebrated the Feast Day of St. Catherine. We held an assembly in the hall to announce the winners of the art competition and the St. Catherine’s fact finding mission.
On Wednesday, 29th of April we held a big W.O.W. Day and the children were encouraged to wear green accessories.
Thank you very much to Maz who came into school with the 6 Nations Ladies’ Cup.
The fourth classes organised a fantastic Cake Sale to help raise money for their swimming lessons.

4th Class participated in a Citywide Reading Project and went to Cabra Library for a presentation ceremony. Well done girls!

To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day Ms Shovlin’s Class wore odd socks on Wednesday, 25th of March.
The whole school took turns in going for a 2km Easter Fun Run in ‘The Bogies’. It was great fun.

2nd – 6th of March 2015
The school celebrated World Book Week. A bookmark competition took place throughout the school and a winner from each class won a book. A book swap was also held in Ms Carroll’s room on Friday afternoon. Ms Sutton’s Class went on a trip to Eason’s on O’ Connell Street and received goody bags and used their book vouchers. They had a great day!

Ms Shovlin’s Class went on a trip to the Education Centre at Dublin Zoo and participated in an African Rainforest workshop.

The Green School Committee held an assembly in the hall to encourage the girls to walk to school to help save our planet. The winners of the poster competition were also announced. Congratulations to all the girls who took part in the competition. Ms Cummins’ Class won the Green Boot Award for being the class with the most walkers.
Tuesday, 17th of February 2015
Happy Pancake Tuesday from all the girls in St. Catherine’s. Some of the classes had great fun enjoying the lovely pancakes.
9th of February – 13th of February 2015
Our school celebrated Art and Music Week and listened to classical music over the intercom each morning. Our school created a large display based on Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’. On Friday, 13th of February we held a ‘Love Concert’ and each class sang a love song.
10th of February 2015
Ms Martin’s 5th Class went on a trip to Waterways Ireland in The Grand Canal as part of Engineer’s Week and learned all about our waterways and the work of engineers. They had great fun.
4th of February 2015
Ms Shovlin’s 5th Class went on a trip to Leinster House. They had a fantastic day and got to see around the whole building and saw plenty of familiar faces including the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe.
3rd of February 2015
Áine from Green Schools came into school to give talks to each class about the causes and effects of climate change. She spoke about the importance of walking, cycling and using the bus to travel to school.
4th and 5th Class girls have been busy making crosses for St. Bridget’s Day.
December 2014:
The school put on a fantastic performance of ‘Cinder Eile’ which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to Ms O Neill for her hard work.
November 2014:
6th Class girls made Christmas Boxes for the charity Team Hope to deliver to boys and girls in Africa and Eastern Europe.
Thursday, 9th October 2014: Tree Day
We got a guided tour around the trees in Phoenix Park by two Park Rangers. We studied the leaves, the fruits and the bark.
Wednesday, 8th October 2014: Cross Country Races at Santry
Ms. Waters and out Athletics Coach Mary Mc Kenna organised our entries for races at Santry. It was a great day out and we met many of our old friends who are in secondary school now.
