Active Schools – Physical Education

All pupils are provided with 60 minutes timetabled PE every week.

Curriculum Strands

All classes are taught at least 5 different PE strands every year and 4th classes also are taught aquatics.

Dance

Students across the school learned the ‘Jerusalema’ dance and took part in the challenge. Here is our ‘Jerusalema’ dance.

Games

Our teachers work together to strengthen their delivery of a different PE strand every year. This year we focussed on ‘Games’. Below are some photographs of the pupils participating in Tennis, Rounders and Gaelic Football.

Athletics

The ‘Daily Mile’ is a part of the school day for all classes.

Fifth and sixth class pupils also take part in the ‘Marathonkids’ initiative run by Dublin City Council.

Pupils have participated in the local ‘Schools Cross Country Running Competition’ held in the local park in April with some of the girls being given the opportunity to take part in the Santry Races.

Fun events such as the ‘Reindeer Run’ are enjoyed by all!

Gymnastics

Pupils learn skills relating to different kinds of movements such as hopping, jumping, balancing and rolling. They learn how to combine these skills into a sequence of movements and how to complete the movements in a safe manner.

Outdoor and Adventure Activities

Aquatics

Pupils from Fourth Class take part in a ten week programme of swimming lessons in the final term. They are taught by Swim Ireland qualified instructors. They are broken into groups according to their level of previous experience and taught skills relative to this. Basic water confidence, balance, flotation, breathing, stroke development and diving are taught.

PAWS Water Safety Programme

Our school teaches the Land PAWS water safety programme every year.

All classes are encouraged to learn about safety in and around water and swimming pools. They are taught about respect for water and its dangers.
