School Year 2017-2018

 

The theme of this year’s summer camp was ‘The Carnival Comes to Cabra’. It was a fantastic week with activities including;

A trip to the library, shopping, baking, balloon making, circus workshops and the camp finished with a carnival in which each child had a stall.

Active Week 2018

Our athletes had a brilliant day in Santry and represented the school so well.

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ms. Shovlin’s 2nd Class had the most fantastic day at Bloom today.

They got a tour of the farm and enjoyed some wonderful exhibits in the children’s section.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ms. McCrea and Ms. O’Brien’s Class enjoyed a wonderful day in the D.I.T. Sports Facility in Broombridge.

The event was organised and hosted by the Gardaí and it was a great day out.

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A big congratulations to Ms. Padden’s 6th Class who reached the regional finals of the Irish Aid Competition.

The school received a plaque of recognition for their contribution to the competition.


 

 

 

 

 

We have been awarded a plaque for our wonderful work in science, maths, technology and engineering.

 


 

2nd Class and members of the Green School’s Committee have been busy writing letters to hotels, restaurants and An Taoiseach asking them to spread our message to ask people to use biodegradable straws rather than plastic straws which pollute our seas and oceans. So far, students have received responses from An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Castleknock Hotel and Irish Vintners Association.

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It was lovely to host the Localise Graduation in our school recently.

It is a huge credit to all the students who participated in the programme.

Minister Paschal Donohoe presented the certificates to the girls for their good work for the patients and staff in the Mater Hospital.

 


 

 

 

 

We were delighted to collect our 5th Green Flag for Biodiversity in DCU recently.

We received the flag for our hard work in the school garden while maintaining are other themes such as; litter, energy, water and travel.

It was a great day!

 


 

Ms. Padden’s Sixth Class visited Workday in Arran Quay as part of Engineer’s Week.

The girls had a fantastic day learning about engineering and participating in ‘design and make’ activities.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4th Classes held a very successful Cake Sale recently.

Ms. McCrea’s Class had three engineers visit from ESB.

They did a workshop in which the girls made drawbots. It looks like so much fun!


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2nd classes participated in the Road Safety workshops which took place in the hall.

Girls received tips on how to walk and travel safely including wearing a seatbelt and using a booster seat.

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dressed in blue to raise awareness of Autism.

Children also listened to some lovely stories and watched very informative videos during the week.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As a reward for all their hard work, 2nd classes enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt in the front grounds of our school.

 


 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ms. Shovlin’s Class were delighted to welcome parent volunteers to their classroom to help make Easter Bunnies from socks and rice.

Ms. Harvey’s 5th Class have been using meter sticks to measure the perimeter of various pieces of classroom furniture.

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Beast from the East provided some interesting learning opportunities.

Ms. Harvey’s Class gathered snow and tested to see which insulators keep the snow frozen for the longest time.

 

 


 

 

 

 

A huge congratulations to Maja who was chosen as a winner in the ‘Letters to Pope Francis’ Competition. Her letter has been published in a book ‘Fáilte Pope Francis’.

 


 

 

 

 

 

6th Class showcase their wonderful talents and communication skills in the next promotional video for Irish Aid.

 

 


 

 

Our school was delighted to welcome the Papal Nuncio to Ireland Archbishop Jude Okolo to our school. The choir sang the song ‘A Joy For All the Earth’ and the student council welcomed the Archbishop to the school. Fr. Michael and Ms. O Reilly welcomed the Archbishop and thanked him for coming to our school. The girls had an opportunity to ask questions and really enjoyed the experience.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5th Classes visited the Botanic Gardens on Tuesday, 13th of February and participated in a ‘Delve Deeper’ workshop in which the girls looked at berries, leaves and fruits under the microscope and then went on a tour of the gardens. This ties in closely with the Biodiveristy Green Flag.

 

 

 

 



 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Music and Art Week was a huge success. Various pieces of music were played on the intercom each morning, every child in the school decorated a musical intrument and you can see the lucky winners above. Every class sang a ‘Feel Good’ song for the Happy Concert on Friday afternoon.

 

 

 

 



 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We were delighted to have Lauren McGee from the Dublin Ladies Team visit our school during the school. She brought the Brendan Martin Cup with her and the children had an opportunity to ask questions. We look forward to seeing a few Dublin players from St Catherine’s in the coming years.

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ms. Bourke’s 3rd class and the Diversity Committee had great fun participating in an Intercultural Music Workshop. The girls learned three songs – a Japanese song and two African songs.

We celebrated Catholic Schools Week in our school.

Grandparents were invited to mass in the church and treated to a cup of tea afterwards. It was a very special occasion.

 


 

Our Biodiversity Board really ‘livens’ up the corridor.

Many classes received wonderful growing kits from ‘Innocent’. The girls sowed spinach, peas and cress and look forward to watching them grow. There will be a Star Grower each week, this is the person whose crop has grown the most, this fits in perfectly with our maths (length).

 


 

Winter Eco-Safari

 

Ms. Shovlin’s 2nd Class and Ms. Harvey’s 5th Class went on an eco-safari to the local park on Tuesday, 30th of January. The students brought pooters and magnifying glasses and found mini beasts and flowers. Even though the weather was cold the students had great fun and found ladybirds, spiders, worms and slugs. Crocuses and daffodils are beginning to make an appearance too.

A big congratulations to Ms. Harvey’s Class who attended the RDS Primary Science Fair with their project ‘Where in the School are the Most Germs?’. Great work girls! Evelyn Cusack from RTE Weather gave the girls some wonderful feedback on their great work.

Christmas Concert

We recently held our Christmas Concert. 2nd Class did a nativity play and all the other classes sang some lovely Christmas songs. The school choir also showcased their talent.

Intercultural Week was a huge success. Students brought in items from countries around the world for a whole class display, created artwork and even wrote a short piece of writing in their second language. The school gathered for an assembly on the Friday and sang songs or performed dances from around the world. E.g. If You’re Happy and You Know It in Italian. Ms. Bourke’s Class and Ms. McCrea’s Class also did projects based on countries around the world and Famous International Women. Some girls wore traditional costumes for the concert. It was a great week!

On Friday, 27th of October we held a Biodiversity Action Day in conjunction with the Green Schools Committee. It was a great day with lots of colourful costumes including bumble bees, bunny rabbits, flowers and much more. We had a lovely parade at the end of the day where each class walked around while lovely songs such as ‘I Like the Flowers’ played in the background.

On Tuesday, 24th of October the whole school participated in a Science Fair in the hall.

Intel came to pick a project from the 4th-6th classes which will now progress to the next stage of the Intel Mini Scientist in Leixlip.

 


Bake Sale

 

 

On Wednesday, 25th of October we held a Bake Sale for the missions.

We thank everyone who baked and helped to make our Bake Sale such a success.

 


Maths Week

 

 

Maths Week was great fun. Each child was given a unique login code for Mangahigh.com and the girls logged in during the week. One student even earned a gold medal from Mangahigh with over 150 points. Each class decorated a flower or creature for our Maths Garden which is under construction in the school hall. The winners of the art competition were Ms. Gallagher’s 2nd class and Ms. O’Brien’s 4th Class, each class received a Maths Bingo Game. Girls who worked very hard on Managhigh won Maths Snap Games for their great efforts.

2nd class enjoyed planting daffodil bulbs in the school garden and conkers in pots in the classroom.

 The girls look forward to watching them grow.

 


 

Tree Day

All classes visited Phoenix Park for Tree Day. Some of the interesting facts which the girls learned are;

  • Fencing protects the trees from the deer in the park.
  • The age of a tree is calculated by counting the rings on the bark.
  • Lime trees grow in the park and they do not grow limes.
  • When a tree is ill, fungus grows on the tree.

The girls had great fun collecting conkers.

To celebrate upcoming Tree Day the Tree Council of Ireland has given schools a change to plant an Alder Tree Sapling.

2nd Class planted the sapling and look forward to watching it grow.


 

 

Science Club has started for the seniors.

They seem to be getting really involved in the wonderful world of science in the most fun way.

Friendship Week

Friendship Week was a great success.

There was a whole school assembly on Friday, 29th of September during which the girls spoke of what makes a great friend. During the week each class had been designing Friendship Lego characters and a winner from each class was chosen. The girls also sang ‘Count on Me’ and ‘Everything is Awesome’ from the Lego Movie. Ms. Heeney’s Class entertained everyone with dances they had prepared for each song.
